Caring for Chalk Boards

The best recommendation is to read and follow the care instructions that come with the chalk board.

"Breaking in" the chalk board prior to writing on it:
 
  • Chalk the entire surface, using a side of a piece of pure white dustless chalk.  Avoid chalk with a glazed surface.
  • Work the chalk into the surface using an all felt eraser.
  • Repeat again - covering the entire surface with chalk and working the chalk into the surface with an all felt eraser.
  • Clean the board with a dry chamois or a soft lint-fee cloth.
Cleaning:
  • Dry cleaning has proven to be the best and easiest method for all types of chalk boards.
  • Erase the entire surface with a clean felt eraser and then wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth or dry chomois.
  • To remove foreign matter, such as stains, fingerprints, crayon, pencil marks etc. it may be desirable to wash the board with water.  A mild household cleaner may be used on stubborn stains.  Avoid the use of strong cleaners containing oil, soda, kerosene, or harsh abrasives.
  • Dry the chalk board immediately so that the chalk dust will not dry on the surface, producing a gray file or smeary condition.
Water itself will not harm the chalk board; however, the combination of water and chalk residue on the surface can create problems.  When the chalk board is washed, the water combines with the chalk binder particles to form a substance that produces a white film or glaze on the surface.  This may result in a slick, glossy surface unfit for writing.  For best results, wet cleaning should be performed only when absolutely necessary.  For best results, dry clean the chalk board.
